They Work For Us!!!

Isn’t it funny that the poiticians have forgetten who they work for? Isn’t it even funnier that we have forgotten that they work for us?

Society as a whole seems to think that the system runs like this: A politician gets his name out there by making promises and runs for the senate or congress. A few people show up at the polls and vote him into office. He forgets all about the promises he made while running for office and out of nowhere, he votes for a bill that goes against every promise he made to the people who voted for him. The people say, “Oh well, wait until election time.”

This is why we are in such a mess as a nation. The Preamble to the US Constitutuin begins with, “We the people”, not ,”We the politicians”.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. 

It is we the people who establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, etc. The Constitution confirms it.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Christians tend to look at the American political process a little skewed if you ask me. We, in my opinion, have things a little backwards. Scripture says that we are to submit to whatever those in authority over us says to do as long as we do not sin against God (Romans 13:1-3). Paul wrote this while Nero was Emperor of Rome. Hardly a true Democracy or Republic, the people of Rome had no say as to who ruled over them. So, you don’t want to pay taxes or worship the emperor? No problem. Capital Punishment ruled the day!

Well, here we are in America, 2009, the land of the free and home of the brave.  America, a republic governed by a document called The Constitution of the United States, which lays out our rights as citizens to choose those who will be in authority. America, whose stars and stripes still wave, albeit they wave a little lower because we have neglected our duty as stewards and have let those of whom we have elected into office to get away with poor job performance and dereliction of duty.

You see, if we understand who those in authority really are, we may be able to get back what we have allowed to get away from us. For instance: If a board of directors appoints someone to power, who has the most power? The Board has the most power. What we have failed to see is that we the people are the Board of Directors. It is our vote that appoints those in power to power. Never at any time have we the people relinquished our power. The ony thing we have done is failed to exercise our power until it is time to vote again. And there are so few of us that actually vote unless it is a presidential year.

Citizenship doesn’t stop at the voting booth. As good stewards, we have a responsibilty to care for what has been entrusted to us. Could you imagine a Fortune 500 CEO hiring a hot shot executive, signing him to a 2 year, 4 year or 6 year contract and then watch this hot shot make a mess of his company and wait until his contract is up to talk to him about his performance? No Way! He would call him to the carpet and tell him to clean up his act or he could forget about ever having his contract renewed when it came time to do so.

Congressmen, Senators, Representatives and every other elected public official are no different. We elect them to serve the public interest and if they don’t, they have to answer to us. If they don’t, we can fire them at the next election. A good boss always keeps his employees in check and we have to let them know when they’re not doing a good job! I once heard a politician say that when they receive one e-mail or phone call, they consider that one person speaking for 50 more who, for one reason or another, didn’t speak up. So for every 10 people who contact their representative, it’s the same as 500 people contacting them. What if there were whole community’s contacting their representatives? What kind of impact could we make? Actually there are. Isn’t it curious that, even though the homosexual community, which makes up less than 1% on the population, has been able to get politicians to bend over backwards to cater to their agenda?

We can’t just let them run roughshod over the Constitution and sit back and watch. We have the right to speak up. The bible doesn’t remove that right from us. Paul exercised that right when he appealed to Caesar and demanded that his case be heard. I wonder what Paul would say about Christians sitting back and watching their country turn a blind eye to the sinfulness that is taking place when we have the opportunity to stop it. From alcahol to pornography, the United States is a world leader because we won’t take the politicians out of the lobbyist’s back pocket and put them back into ours. We must stop saying, “THE END IS NEAR”, and using that as an excuse to fold our hands and wait for Jesus to come for His church.

It’s time to reevaluate our duty as the Board of US citizens and stand up for righteousness. I’m not saying that we need to turn this into a righteous nation (that’s impossible and unbiblical) but 1 million abortions a year is 1 million to many. When a governor fails to stand up for the vote of the majority, he needs to be told to stand down. When a senator says that 25% of the military budget needs to be cut, he needs to be told that he is out of control. When the president talks about creating a civilian national security force” just as strong and power and well funded as our existing military, we have to say, “You and what army,” and remember the Nazi Youth and the Brown Shirts of Hitler.

 We have let our wonderful nation get out of our grip. It’s time to pull together and reign it back in. We need to stop electing politicians and start appointing statesmen like Mike Pence of Indiana and Michele Bachman of Minnesota instead. We need to make sure they’re putting life ahead of personal comfort. We need to make sure they know just who it is they work for.
